AをBするのを防ぐ

【例文】

（若者がギャング団に入らないよう防ぐことは社会にとって大事である。）

【意味】

良くても、せいぜい

【例文】

Roth in Kunitachi can get A- at best
（国立に住んでるロスはせいぜいよくても取れてA-だ。）

He’s at best a second player in our school.
（彼はせいぜい僕たちの学校で2番手の選手だ。）

She will earn as much as he can at best.
（彼女は良くても彼と同じ位の稼ぎになるだろう。）

【補足】

at the bestとtheを付ける場合もありますが、その場合は単に「最善の状態で」などと否定的なニュアンスがないこともあります。

atをある一点を表すと捉えられると分かり易いです。
この考えの上に立てば
at last 「ついに」
at least「少なくとも」
なども理解しやすいでしょう。
